Prof. Dinesh Singh
Sub.: Demand for removal of Prof. Sudhish Pachauri, an accused in the case of sexual harassment, from the post of the Dean of Colleges.
We, the members of Committee for Struggle against Sexual Harassment in the Hindi Department, would like to bring to your kind notice the following facts:
The University, being a sacrosanct point of learning and academics, should ensure equal opportunities for education to women, particularly those who come from suburban and rural areas. The University campus needs to be free from all type of anti-social activities that discourage or deter women students in their academic pursuits. Sexual harassment, when it occurs within the student-teacher relationship, is the worst form of gender domination. Legal and ethical injunctions against such gender aggression, howsoever stringent, cannot be effective in any way until the educated community like the university authorities, students and teachers adopt a stiff position against it. Attempts to overlook, underplay or outright denial will offer no solution. It will, in fact, contribute to further assertion of gender domination and sexual harassment.
As you are aware, a student from the Department of Hindi has been fighting a case of sexual harassment against three teachers Prof. Ajay Tiwari, Prof. Sudhish Pachauri and Prof. Ramesh Gautam since the year 2008. After her long struggle, the University did take a stand against Prof. Tiwari but despite being passed in the EC one and half year ago, the decision of his termination has not been implemented yet. The other two teachers mentioned in the complaint were allowed to go scot free simply on their version of the case. The victim’s repeated demands submitted in writing seeking permission to counter question their version was declined by the University. She has consequently gone to the Court regarding this matter and has informed the V. C. office about it.
The appointment of Prof. Pachauri as Dean of Colleges, in such circumstances, has given us much reason to be upset. We have serious apprehensions that Prof. Pachauri will use his power and position as Dean to adversely influence the case. He has already misused his office as Head of Department, to deny the victim admission to Ph. D. although she had topped in M. Phil. This was done to punish the victim because of her firm stand and protest. Prof. Pachauri did not stop there. He flouted the laid down procedure and norms to admit candidates in Ph. D. who had supported the accused teachers as witnesses in the case. The victim has gone to the Court against this injustice also.
We appeal to you to remove Prof. Pachauri from the office of Dean of Colleges and other responsibilities to enable a fair and unbiased examination of the ongoing cases against him. It is unimaginable and unethical for an accused to hold the high office through which the related case files must necessarily pass. We further appeal to you to remove Prof. Ramesh Gautam as well from all responsible positions like expert panel, V. C. nominee, examination etc. so that he does not influence the academic/administrative decisions in the Department/University.
Sir, we hope that you will accept our appeal to restore our faith in the democratic functioning of the University and to ensure that women students’ pleas for justice do not pass unheard.
